For the earth will be filled With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2:14

Who Art Thou O Great Mountain

Lord, I pray that the Spirit of God would come upon everyone that reads this message.  The bible begins with the earth without form and void, with darkness covering the face of the deep and it was then that “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters”.  You were there by your Spirit, by your presence before you spoke a word.  Everything was chaos, empty, formless, without light, without, warmth, without love in this and your creative power was released then as it is today, “the Spirit of God moved”, “hovered lovingly”, and then everything began to change.  “Not by might, nor by power but by My Spirit saith the Lord of hosts”.  You have yearning to bring us to the place where we really know what this means and we want to learn,  because we know that your creative power is unleashed when the Spirit of God is able to move freely for only you can create and do what you did at the beginning over and over again in our lives in Jesus name.

So many messages have been preached on Zechariah 4:6…

“Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the   word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might nor by power but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts”

Something cannot be done by one’s might, something cannot be accomplished by one’s power but it can only be accomplished by God’s Spirit.  In verse 7 we have the answer.

“Who art thou O great mountain?”….and what will become of this great mountain?  “before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain”!

A mountain shall be leveled and the only thing we see mentioned as to how, is “shoutings of grace, grace”.

So the great mountain cannot be leveled except by the Spirit of God and man’s role is the conviction that it is by grace.

This whole passage from Zechariah 4:1-10 is full of insights on seeing the mountains of one’s life, the difficulties in one’s path, the contradictions one faces in this journey,  be removed, be leveled so one can walk on the path from victory to victory.

Let’s look at the entire passage…..

“And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me as a man that is wakened out of his sleep,

And said unto me, What seest thou?  And I said, I have looked and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl on the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof

And two olive trees but it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other on the left side thereof

So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my Lord?

Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, knowest not what these be? And I said, No, my Lord”

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit saith the LORD of hosts

Who art thou O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings crying, Grace, Grace unto it

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you

For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with the seven; they are the eyes of the LORD which run to and fro through the whole earth”

This is an incredible portion of scripture.  One thing that strikes me right away is that an angel comes to this man, wakes him up and asks him what he sees.  Then when Zerubbabel tells him about seeing a candlestick, the bowl on top, the seven lamps and the two olive trees standing on each side of the bowl, he asks the angel what they are?

The angel does not answer the question as you would imagine he would but begins to bring the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying  that it will not be might, nor by power but by God’s spirit and then brazenly declaring, WHO ART THOU O GREAT MOUNTAIN?.  The angel says that this great mountain will become a plain, it will be no longer there, it will no longer stand in the way and the ONLY way this will happen is by the spirit of the LORD.  So we must hear what God is saying in this passage of scripture and why is that?  Because all of us face mountains in our lives.

This word “mountain” in the Hebrew comes from a word that means “to loom up”.  It is an obstacle that must be conquered, something that happens in your life that blocks your forward progress.  It makes your path not easy, hinders your forward movement.  It opposes you, defies you, challenges you.  It is a “great” mountain.  That word means large in magnitude and extent, large in number and in intensity.  It also means loud, like it is shouting at you, drowning out your voice, commanding your attention.  It also means older, meaning it can be something in your life that has been there a long time and you have not overcome it.  Yet, WHO ART THOU?  You will be conquered, you do not intimidate me at all!  You will be leveled, you will no longer be in my way, is the thought! And how will that happen?  “Not by might…..nor by power…but by my spirit saith the Lord”!!!

You do not receive the abundant life, the overcoming life, the fulfillment of your promises, the destiny prophesied by your own might and power.  The word might means what you possess within yourself.  It is translated, strength, might, efficiency or ones substance.  It is translated army.  One way of understanding this is recalling the story of when David numbered Israel, trying to see if he had enough of a physical army to defeat the enemy and God was upset at that because it is not in numbers but in God.  One angel of God killed 185,000 of the enemy in one night in another passage of scripture while Gods people slept,  surrounded by them.  David lost sight of that.  It is not what you have in yourself, it is what you know about God.

And this is the heart of this passage.  A revelation that there must be an understanding that God Himself must be relied on and trusted in to be who He says He is in one’s life, especially when difficulties surmount.  The word “power” simply means human strength, human ability.  It is not what you intrinsically possess within yourself and it is not how much human exertion you put forth against the enemy that will win the battle.  You must stand before the obstacles in your life that oppose what God has said He would be to you and do for you in utter dependence and faith in His commitment to level the mountains you face.  In that settled position of ruthless trust in His goodness you are now prepared to say Who art thou O great mountain?.  Faith attracts the might and power from God as you recognize the Holy Spirit enforces the victory of Jesus Christ in our lives.  And just like in the beginning verses of the Bible, nothing is too difficult for God, He is not at all flustered by the seeming impossibilities we face, for He knows that His presence and Spirit, His person being present will create whatever is needed in our lives.

It is interesting that Zerubbabel means, “to dry up, to be scorched, to be burned” along with “confusion by mixing”.  He was the man who would see mountains level, lay the foundation and finish it of the house of God.  A descendant of Babylon as we all are.  So it does not matter who you think you are or what you have gone through in life that seems to disqualify you from being an overcomer.  It is by my spirit saith the LORD.  God has given every human being a measure of faith, and we have the ability to believe, it is a choice.  God is called The LORD of hosts!  Hosts means “that which goes forth”, an army of angels, all creation.  It means to do service, meaning God is ready to serve by demolishing mountains if you will hilariously believe it because of the finished work of Jesus Christ.  It means to FIGHT, to WAGE WAR.  God is saying that HE will wage war on your behalf and too often we are always thinking of what we must do before we are convinced of what He WILL DO on our behalf and believing that is the first step out of which everything else follows.

Who is larger?  The mountains in your life or God?  To become more aware of Him and His greatness not the seemingly great mountain in our path.  God is trying to get us to know HIM.  It is fascinating that in Jeremiah 33:1-3, the word of the LORD comes to Jeremiah when he was in prison the second time.  He was called to minister to 5 countries and now is in prison in the 1st country and that was a mountain in his life.  God comes to Jeremiah and I am sure Jeremiah wanted a practical answer to his dilemna, like a rope to get out.  God starts declaring who He is in verse 2 instead.  Then He just tells Jeremiah to call unto HIm, and that He will answer in a very public way and His answer shall be “great and mighty things”.  When you look at these two words, you jump for joy at what God can do.  Great things actually speaks of God making Himself GREAT to the heart of Jeremiah.  A personal revelation of just how incredibly powerful He is.  Not the powerful things He does only but a revelation to establish Jeremiah in His character, so he does not ever think that anything he faces in his life is greater than God.  The word MIGHTY means to “access that which has been inaccessible”, wow.  Jeremiah would access all that God promised him, and he did minister to all the countries and gave all the words God wanted him to share with each one!

God is more for us than we know.   What Jesus did in dying for us and rising from the dead and sending the Holy Spirit allows God to be Himself and give us all things, lead us always forth in triumph and destroy all the works of the enemy in our lives.  There is nothing impossible to God, all things are possible with God, and it was the Holy Spirit that came upon the virgin Mary to birth the son of God and there will always be a performance of the Lord, not your performance, but His performance as the mighty way maker, the God that makes the iron axe head float to the surface.  A God who can move upon the areas of our lives that are formless, wounded, hurt, empty, deadened, filled with failures and disappointments, darkened in some ways so we cannot see Him or life clearly and as you give the Holy Spirit freedom, trust in Him, He makes all things new.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.  Another way to say this is where the Spirit is Lord then God is emancipated or set free by our giving Him the freedom to be Himself(2 Cor 3:16-18)  Moves of God and transformation come through the Holy Spirit being free to do what He wants and the renewing of our mind.  But we must have His presence, He must be present like He was in Genesis in the creation and THEN speak.  There is a posture of being dependent and trusting before God, a settled conviction of real faith to birth the Isaacs of one’s life.  When you come to the place where it cannot be your strength, your efforts, your wisdom, your experience but rather a deep heart knowing that it will be by His Spirit, you begin to see the mountains crumble before you…

Shoutings of grace, grace…that is what Zerubbabel did.  It speaks of clamor and noise. loud noise.  It means to devastate and ravage, to rush along.  The focus was God’s grace, His favor released because of Jesus, His graciousness, His charm and elegance!!!  Our eyes are not to be on the mountain but on the nature of God.  That word grace also means to incline in order to encamp around and to lay siege!!! If you let God be God, He will incline, bend down, come on your behalf, fight for you and lay siege to the enemy and also encamp around you for your protection.   Are we aware of God more than the mountains in our lives!!!

His Spirit “hovered lovingly” as it says in Genesis 1:2.  This is all about His love for us.  Because He is so in love with us, He wants us to allow His Spirit in our lives by renewing our mind to know that He is FOR US, working in us to want and to do of His good pleasure, and that is why the Holy Spirit is so important to the believer and to accomplish God’s ends in this world.  Not by might, by power, by programs, by tradition, by form, or dead structure but by THE BREATH OF GOD, THE WIND OF HEAVEN, THE SPIRIT OF THE ALMIGHTY.  May move upon you as never before to shout grace, grace, grace to the mountains of your life.  That simply means the loudest thing erupting in your being is not the enormous obstacles you have faced or are facing now, but the God who is looming up inside of you as you realize that His Spirit is moving and ready to give you the victory!!!
